Golden Yarrow for
Sensitivity & Self-Integrity
by Kyra Mesich, Psy.D.
The following two cases demonstrate how Golden Yarrow flower essence can have a profound impact on the varied symptoms that accompany the sensitive personality. Doug, an adult male with chronic depressive episodes, and Ruthie, a young child diagnosed with ADD, both benefited from a new approach to their sensitivity, including the use of Golden Yarrow essence.
Doug: A Case of Recalcitrant Depression
Doug’s primary concerns included a lack of direction in his career, chronic depressive episodes, and spontaneous psychic experiences. Doug described that several times a year he is overcome with severe depression, which can be incapacitating and last for up to three to four weeks. Doug is naturally intuitive, and admits to varied psychic experiences, which he has rarely discussed with anybody. He describes himself as a sensitive per-son, with an emotional nature, empathic under-standing of others, artistic abilities, and a tendency to feel overwhelmed by stressors or social interaction.
His interest in sensitivity led him to read The Sensitive Persons Survival Guide. Based on the information about flower essences learned from the book, Doug identified with Golden Yarrow. He began taking Golden Yarrow essence and reported a change in the experience of his depressive episodes after consistent use during a period of two weeks. Subsequently, he stated that he felt a depressive episode coming on, and was expecting the typical two week incapacitation. Instead, he found that he was able to work through the depression in a matter of two hours — an experience he had never had prior to taking the Golden Yarrow flower essence.
Doug explained that he was not overcome by the usual depressive thoughts and moods. He was able to maintain some emotional objectivity while doing journal writing and talking with his wife. After a couple of hours, he felt the dark mood lift. Doug reported this experience with much surprise and enthusiasm.

Since using Golden Yarrow flower essence, Doug noted the following emotional shifts: his sensitivity did not seem as intense — he could be around groups of people or moderately stressful situations without feeling overwhelmed. He felt more hopeful about his career future. He began to connect his creative talents and intuitive abilities in ways he had not considered before, such as new ideas for writing and music projects.
Additional Note: The Golden
Yarrow flower essence did not completely eliminate Doug’s depression,
nor did it numb him to his emotional experiences. To the contrary, the
result appeared to be a greater synthesis of his emotions, abilities and
sense of self. Doug enrolled in a course of classes to develop his
intuitive and psychic abilities. Benefits from the classes and Golden
Yarrow flower essence left Doug with a greater feeling of control over
his sensitivities, and a better understanding of how his gifts and
talents can be used in his career and life. He continues to experience a
significantly reduced intensity of depressive episodes, during which he
is now able to look inward and gain a greater under-standing of
himself, rather than completely shut-ting down in pain as before.
Ruthie: A Complex Case of Behavioral Problems
The mother contacted the author for a consultation with the following concerns: Ruthie had continual behavioral problems at school, including acting out, stealing items and poor completion of schoolwork. At home, Ruthie’s behavioral problems continued with frequent arguments with sib-lings and tantrums. The mother described that Ruthie seemed to lack an understanding of social relationships and boundaries. Because of Ruthie’s numerous behavioral problems at school, she has been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder by a school psychologist.
Ruthie’s mother wasn’t satisfied with the ADD diagnosis as an explanation of Ruthie’s behavior, and wanted to gain a better understanding of the underlying issues resulting in Ruthie’s numerous problems. The mother described that Ruthie’s behavior seemed at its worst when Ruthie was at the center of attention. For example, when singled out in class to answer a question or engage in an activity, Ruthie would react erratically with developmentally inappropriate responses (as if she was three years old, according to her mother). This trend continued at home, where Ruthie would respond to direct attention from siblings or parents with aggressive behavior or with tantrums.
Ruthie’s mother surmised that she began seeing behavioral changes in her
daughter when she was two years old. At that time, Ruthie seemed to
undergo a personality change from a personable baby to a moody,
withdrawn, and sometimes spacey toddler. The mother admitted that she
had tried numerous venues to help Ruthie with no success. She said that
her biggest concern was that she couldn’t understand Ruthie. She
explained further that she appreciated the motivations and behavior of
her other four children but didn’t feel connect-ed to Ruthie, and was at
a loss to know how to help her.
Ruthie’s symptom picture was fairly severe. Because of the complexity of Ruthie’s case, treatment began with a healing session to uncover the origins of her dysfunction. Golden Yarrow was identified as a key flower essence. Ruthie’s behavioral problems primarily stemmed from her reaction to her parents’ divorce. The personality change emerged at age two when Ruthie became developmentally able to have cognitive understanding of what the divorce meant for her family. Ruthie reacted by feeling her world had fallen apart. She responded by testing the boundaries of family, school and social interactions.
Although Ruthie did not appear as a typically sensitive child, this was exactly the area where she needed the greatest support. She felt vulnerable and emotionally shattered following her parents’ divorce. This affected her sense of self and her ability to trust or connect with anyone, adult or peer. Golden Yarrow honed in on the core issues of vulnerability and social disconnection.

Ruthie responded positively to healing interventions, including Golden Yarrow. For example, her mother was stunned to report that for the first time ever, Ruthie apologized to one of her siblings following an argument. The mother reported that Ruthie had never before exhibited such socially appropriate behavior of her own accord. This instance was followed by other small steps which demonstrated that Ruthie was cautiously but steadily reconnecting with the people around her. (Please note that the author is keenly aware that in childhood cases of disruptive behavioral outbursts and/or personality changes; sexual, emotional and physical abuse should always be investigated as possible causes. These factors were investigated and ruled out.)
In summary, these two cases demonstrate the powerful benefits that Golden Yarrow essence can have toward apparently overwhelming psychological problems. These cases also show how sensitivity can manifest quite differently by age group. In straightforward cases, adults will self-identify as a sensitive personality type. Children, on the other hand, typically cannot self-report their inner experiences. It is not uncommon that a young child’s response to social overwhelm culminates in inappropriate behavioral outbursts. It is likely that without intervention, Ruthie would have grown up to be an easily identifiable Golden Yarrow type, prone to social isolation, oversensitivity, or substance abuse. Despite their differences, both these cases evidenced the core meaning of Golden Yarrow: to bring forth integrity of the self in a social context.
